Emilia Wickstead looked to Lee Miller for SS23 – one of the most remarkable female icons of the 20th century – with a collection that paid tribute to her independent spirit and innate sense of style. To complement the designer’s vision, models had a glossy skin, ‘no-makeup’ makeup look, created by leading makeup artist Naoko Scintu using Natura Bissé’s Diamond Extreme Collection. Here’s how to recreate that lit-from-within glow.
Visionary, free spirit, trailblazer… Lee Miller was the inspiration behind Emilia Wickstead’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection, which the designer unveiled this week via video during London Fashion Week. Taking Miller’s extraordinary versatility and creativity as a model, artist, journalist, surrealist pioneer alongside Man Ray, fashion photographer, chef and the first ever female war correspondent, Wickstead’s new collection paid homage to the multi-hyphenate’s work and her innate sense of style. “I was entranced by her freedom of spirit,” the designer explained.

Themes of experimentation and surrealism – and an undercurrent of sensuality – ran throughout. Floral motifs on silk were overlaid with printed organza to create a blurred, 3D effect, while voluminous gowns were juxtaposed with micro mini dresses, folds and pleats twisted and warped, necklines deconstructed and Mary Jane pumps had clear perspex heels to give the illusion of walking on air. To enhance her vision of bringing a modern edge to one of the 20th century’s true greats, Wickstead teamed up with Natura Bissé, who sponsored the collection in conjunction with the launch of the luxury skincare brand’s new Diamond Extreme Creams.
Naoko Scintu prepping models’ skin with Natura Bissé products
As the models stepped out onto the runway, you could actually see their skin glowing, a natural radiance that celebrated makeup artist Naoko Scintu achieved backstage using Natura Bissé. “Man Ray and a nod to the 20s was the inspiration for the Emilia Wickstead makeup look,” explains Scintu. “I wanted dewy, glossy skin, because it’s the perfect base for minimal foundation and concealer. Natura Bissé products were key to achieve that, to put the skin where I wanted it to be in terms of texture and glow.”
To help deliver the ultimate ‘no makeup, makeup look’, Scintu prepped models’ skin using a curated combination of products from Natura Bissé’s Diamond Extreme Collection. The signature age-defying collection has been formulated to bring vitality to the skin, instantly softening the signs of ageing and rejuvenating the complexion, perfect for that runway-ready glow.
First, Scintu applied the Diamond Extreme Serum (£335) to cleansed skin. The fast-absorbing formula, which launched earlier this year, combines the brand’s proprietary Smart Energy Complex, which includes Artemia salina and peony root extract to instantly lift and revive the skin, with ingredients that complement the skin’s natural cycle including a powerful antioxidant and prebiotic mix for a hit of hydration, and anti-ageing peptides. The energising serum acted as the ideal skincare base, giving the models’ skin an immediate lift.
Next, she used Natura Bissé’s iconic Diamond Extreme Cream. The ultra-hydrating face cream has just celebrated its 20th anniversary and to mark the occasion, the brand has introduced a new-improved formula – ‘the next generation of an icon’. The luxurious upgrade is a blend of revolutionary actives, again including the brand’s proprietary Smart Energy Complex, peptides, lipids and antioxidants designed to repair and shield the skin, while also instantaneously smoothing, firming and energising the complexion.
The new iteration comes in two textures. The light texture (£335) is ideal for those who prefer a fast-absorbing cream and who like more of a matt finish. The rich texture (£335) has a thicker, richer consistency, making it ideal for those with a drier skin or for those who prefer an emollient texture and a more dewy look. Scintu applied the latter, though both have the same efficacy and can adapt to all skin types.
The final skin-prep step was a spritz of the Diamond Mist (£86). Boosted with Artemia salina to stimulate cellular renewal, the mist can be used as a hydrating layer prior to your skincare regime, as a makeup setter or as a refresher during the day. Here, Scintu gently sprayed it onto the models’ faces to re-energise their skin and calm any pre-show nerves with its lavender scent.
The overall effect of using Natura Bissé’s age-defying Diamond Extreme Collection? A beauty look that never goes out of style – glossy skin. The models at Emilia Wickstead SS23 had the kind of luminous, radiant complexion that was a fitting tribute to a timeless icon.
