Our beds and sofas have arguably never been more important — in the Covid era, they’re a much needed sanctuary and place to unwind. This new focus on our homes calls for a rethink of your styling, and anything that brings some some colour and fun into our lives is surely essential right now. One of the buzziest trends as seen all over Instagram is frilled cushions — a thoroughly modern update on a classic style that adds a touch of texture and playfulness to any room. Here, discover the stand-out ruffled cushions to brighten up your home.

The frilled cushion trend has boomed on social media recently thanks to the popularity of the designs by Paboy Bojang, a 28-year-old Gambian currently seeking asylum in Naples. While waiting for his asylum status to be confirmed during the Covid lockdown, tailor-trained Bojang began making ruffle-trimmed cushions using cotton from local Naples supplies, promoting them on Instagram and making them to order in requested colour ways. The cheerfulness of the creator spills over into his designs, available in rich hues of greens, blues and reds as well as more vintage look versions with pastel gingham and soft pinks.Â
Today, the trend is everywhere, adopted by traditional and modern brands alike, each offering their own take on the frilled style. Projektityyny, a nordic-influenced brand based in West Dorset, offers a sizable assortment of designs using gingham, richly toned velvets and delicate floral-printed cottons, the latter of which are similar in style to Liberty’s selection of frilled, floral cushions by Coco & Wolf. Former garment technologist Katy Takla’s sustainably made selection, uses deadstock materials for small batches of eclectic designs that are released fortnightly. For a more subtle nod to the trend, try Trove’s ruffled pillow slip, a soft linen pillowcase available with a variety of contrast trims. Whatever your style, these are the frilled cushions to shop now.Â
