A guide to London’s best hair salons that are reopening this weekend

These are The Glossary’s recommended salons to book into for those much-needed hair transformations, and here’s what they’re doing to make sure they’re Covid safe

Over the last few months of lockdown there are many things we’ve been dreaming of – visiting our favourite art gallery, heading to a concert, jetting off on a long-awaited holiday – but top of that list has to be booking an appointment at the hair salon. Untameable locks, shocking split ends and unsightly at-home dye jobs have left us all in need of expert attention – so this weekend’s grand reopening can’t come soon enough.

But while salons across the city may be opening their doors, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be business as usual. All hairdressers need to comply with the government’s strict coronavirus restrictions, which means maintaining social distancing of at least one metre between each customer, with salons operating between 50% and 75% capacity, and staff wearing full PPE, including visors. Clients, meanwhile, will be required to wear face masks, either disposable ones provided by the salon or your own brought from home, and salon chair catch-ups will be kept to a minimum.

Securing a coveted appointment is likely to prove tricky at first, too, with many of London’s leading salons reporting waiting lists of up to 2,000 and fully-booked diaries for the first three weeks. The majority of hairdressers have increased their working hours to accommodate the initial influx of bookings, with many operating 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

Here, we’ve rounded up our favourite London hair salons to book into from this weekend.

Josh Wood Atelier

Josh and his handpicked team are all experts at performing minor hair miracles, whether that’s creating a totally personalised new shade or correcting any colour-based mishaps that may have occurred over lockdown. Ahead of their reopening, Josh tells us: “We have spent considerable time thinking about how we can build the salon experience of the future which will keep our clients and our team safe. We are ready with spaced seating, online booking, mirror consultations (not face to face) and longer appointment times to allow for additional cleaning.”

Adam Reed

Adam Reed, formerly one half of the Percy & Reed duo, opened his own salon in east London back in February a few weeks before lockdown, as a ‘no-trend’ salon that instead offers curated colours and cuts bespoke to every individual. The quirky Spitalfields space, housed in an old banana merchant’s warehouse and filled with vintage furniture, is also focused on championing local businesses, with its mini boutique stocked with Adam’s favourite lifestyle and beauty brands including candles from Earl of East and lipsticks by Lisa Eldridge. Post-lockdown they’re offering Zoom consultations to minimise face-to-face contact and have fitted screens between styling sections, as well as giving everyone on their priority waiting list £25 off haircuts and £50 off cut and colour for the first 12 weeks. The salon has invested in sustainable personal PPE packs for each client which contains a disposable gown, towels and hand sanitiser as well as a mask, which are all bio-degradable. “We have spent a lot of time to make sure we are fully prepped so everyone feels comfortable and safe. Salon 64

Salon 64, one of London's best hair salons

Part cocktail bar, part salon, this revolutionary beauty spot turned heads when it opened in the heart of Soho three years ago, creating a social hub – complete with full bar – where clients could come to hang out as well as get a great cut or blow dry. On reopening, founder Ricky Walters reveals: “Where many brands are taking away offerings for clients, we’re thinking of innovative ways they can enjoy the same sense of luxury service. Clients are craving nothing but a good time, so we’ll have the champagne flowing, with a few small changes to ensure we are Covid-19 safe.” That includes serving their own-brand coffee in reusable ‘keep me’ cups and cocktails in biodegradable disposable glasses, as well as putting up screens between chairs and asking clients to wear eco-friendly single use gowns.

The Need to Know:

The salon will be open 9am-8pm Monday-Saturday, as well as for the first few Sundays after 4 July to catch up on their waiting list, and bookings are available online or via phone.

Buller and Rice

Buller and Rice

As London’s first sustainable salon, Buller and Rice pride themselves on their eco credentials, with biodynamic products, biodegradable protective capes and environmentally friendly foil alternatives made of recycled paper the norm. And they’re just as committed to maintaining their fun atmosphere, as co-founder Anita Rice shares: “We’re keen to keep the experiential side of the salon alive, so we’ve created an outdoor waiting room at our Walthamstow salon in the style of a tiki bar, complete with local beers, wines and cocktails in cans.”
