Precious, rare and extremely valuable, dazzling blue sapphire jewellery has been prized for centuries thanks to its attributed holistic properties, which include calming the soul, granting divine protection and purity. First discovered in Kashmir around 1881, sapphires come in a multitude of colours, from pink to green, but are best known for velvety cornflower blue hues – no wonder, then, that the natural stone’s name comes from the Latin ‘saphirus’, which means blue.
Often referred to as the royal gemstone, sapphires have long been associated with royalty and it’s even thought that they contributed to the naming of the colour ‘royal blue’. Perhaps one of the most famous sapphire jewels of all time is the engagement ring given to the late Diana, Princess of Wales. Designed by the House of Garrard and featuring a brilliant 12-carat Ceylon blue sapphire set in a halo of 14 diamonds, it’s one of the most iconic pieces of jewellery in history. Now, of course, the same jewel sparkles from the ring finger of Catherine, Princess of Wales, maintaining the sapphire’s royal legacy. Here, we’ve rounded up the finest September birthstone jewellery pieces.
