Hot on the heels of bows and Countrycore, it’s the year of Cowboycore. Western-inspired fashion is having a(nother) moment, thanks in no small part to Beyoncé’s new Country Era, with designers flooding their catwalks with fringe jackets, cowboy boots and Stetsons. The movement is gathering pace among fashion insiders too, with #cowboycore reaching over 11.4 million views on TikTok. So saddle up, here’s everything you need to know to look rodeo-ready in style.
Yee-haw, Cowboycore is galloping into our wardrobes this season. It can be no coincidence that the returning trend for Westernwear coincides with Beyoncé reconnecting with her Southern roots and fully embracing her Country Era. To mark the release of her latest singles Texas Hold ‘Em and 16 Carriages from her upcoming album Act II: Cowboy Carter, the pop superstar is well and truly adopting country-style, posting a series of glamorous Western looks on her Instagram account and stepping out at both the Grammys and the Super Bowl wearing that most iconic of cowboy accessories – the Stetson.
But it’s not just Queen B who is nailing the cowgirl aesthetic. Kim Kardashian was also seen at the Super Bowl in a cowboy hat (by Western brand Kemo Sabe), which she paired with a dark brown plunging cowl neck top and matching suede flared trousers. Meanwhile Bella Hadid has taken the Cowgirlcore trend one step further, by dating Adan Banuelos – a real-life cowboy. The supermodel now regularly posts on her social channels looking rodeo-ready in dark denim bootleg jeans, fringed chaps, leather jackets and square-toed cowboy boots.
Indeed, top of the Cowboycore shopping list are Western boots, with preloved designer clothing platform Depop reporting an 85% surge in users searching for cowboy and cowgirl boots. Other popular items include Western hats, fringe detailing and Western jackets. Meanwhile, ‘cowboy tuxedos’ (aka, double denim looks) are also on the rise, with London-based brand Ahluwalia showing upcycled head-to-toe denim outfits at its recent London Fashion Week show. Unsurprisingly, denim jackets have also seen a surge in searches.
Of course, the Western trend is nothing new. The worlds of fashion and pop culture have long been drawn to the cowboy aesthetic, and it has been gathering momentum for a few seasons now. Indeed it was Scandi label Ganni that first helped re-popularise Cowboy boots back in 2015, making them a must-have cool girl accessory and festival-wear staple.
This year, however, Cowboycore is everywhere. During his latest Louis Vuitton menswear show, Pharrell Williams staged a full-blown Western epic, complete with Stetson cowboy hats, bolo tie necklaces and flared trousers. And while Chloe sent models down the SS24 runway in fringed leather jackets, Molly Goddard presented a new spin on the trend at London Fashion Week last month. Here’s our edit of the best Cowboycore pieces to invest in now.
